Seed Breeding and Research

It is very difficult and expensive to breed new varieties and hybrids. Terral Seed has made the investment, right here in the Mid-South to breed the varieties and hybrids specifically targeted at our region. It is not good enough to develop varieties and hybrids in the Mid-West and bring them down to the South and "see if they will work some years". Terral Seed breeders Dr. Donnie Glover and Dr. Phil Michener make it a point to see that our varieties and hybrids perform in the Mid-South no matter what the conditions, year after year. In fact, it does not matter to us whether they work up in the Mid-West! That is not our home. The Mid-South is our home!

Terral Seed Research is based at our state-of-the-art research station in Greenville, MS with many off-station testing locations throughout the Mid-South. It is with these resources that Terral Seed develops and identifies genetically superior Mid-South adapted corn hybrids, soybean varieties, wheat varieties, and grain sorghum hybrids. It takes thousands of hand pollinations, countless breeding populations, and over 100,000 research plots annually. In fact, our corn hybrids are selected 1 in 5000 and our soybean varieties 1 in 10,000. Great genetics is the first prong of our multiple prong development strategy. To our superior Mid-South developed seed, we make sure you get the traits you want. Terral Seed is at the cutting edge with new and changing traits. In corn we are breeding in the newest and highest yielding traits, Roundup Ready stacked with the newest insect protection and yield enhancement traits. Triple stacked corn hybrids are becoming the norm at Terral Seed, not the exception. In soybeans Terral Seed is on the brink of launching a full lineup of new soybean varieties with soon to be approved technologies. These new traits are producing soybean varieties with the highest value ever seen in the South. The traits that work in the South and the traits you need are all in one great package from Terral Seed.

At Terral Seed Research, Dr. Donnie Glover – Soybean Breeder and Director of Research, and Dr. Phil Michener - Corn Breeder, manage a talented staff of breeding associates. We test for yield and yield stability in good years as well as bad. We test for disease and heat stress, and conduct extensive testing with local Mid-South agronomic conditions like flood irrigation, and clay soil adaptability. We also breed for resistance to emerging diseases such as Asian Soybean Rust. Terral Seed Research is not happy with one season per year; we use three seasons per year all around the world with winter nurseries in South Florida, Puerto Rico, Argentina, South Africa, and Hawaii.

Only after extensive testing for every possible Southern production problem do our seed varieties and hybrids get to go in a Terral Seed bag and out to you. We understand Southern conditions and Southern farming because we farm here, too! We use the same production practices in development as you use to produce your crop. We grow corn after cotton, many times no-till. We plant soybeans in narrow rows, stale on buckshot. We flood fields and use poly pipe just like you do. When you select Terral Seed brand seed products, you can be assured that Lots of Work……PROVEN YIELD!!! is not just a claim. It is a fact.
